From Employee Experience to Employee Engagement

When surveying an HR landscape full of trendy buzzwords, “employee engagement” and “employee experience” may seem like two signposts that point you toward the same destination: happy, motivated, and hard-working employees. Although each practice complements the other, each requires a slightly different mindset.   

“Employee engagement” refers to those strategies that gain your workers’ emotional commitment to their work and the organization as a whole. Engaged employees are motivated to perform because they see how their employer’s vision and values align with their own. Employee engagement strategies include job-specific conditions like the design of the workspace to perks like games rooms, catered lunches, recognition programs, and corporate volunteerism. Organizations that promote teamwork and communication, and provide authentic opportunities for learning and advancement to all employees, boost employee engagement.  

“Employee experience,” or “EX,” is more than just a new buzzword. Employee experience calls upon employers to consider the entirety of the employee’s interaction with their workplace. It’s helpful to think of employee experience as a collection of the various touch-points where an employee interacts with their organization, from onboarding procedures to the physical environment in which they perform their daily tasks. Employers can take action to boost employee experience, such as implementing open-door policies, providing regular performance feedback, and promoting a supportive workplace atmosphere.

Workplace experience expert and writer Jacob Morgan draws upon the analogy of a used car to differentiate between engagement and experience. Morgan argues that while you might spend a significant amount of money improving a car’s external features, if you ignore the parts under the hood, you really haven’t improved the vehicle. If we liken engagement strategies to the kind of detailing that helps you get greater enjoyment from the ride, employee experience becomes the engine that keeps your organization running day after day.       

Ideally, employee engagement and employee experience work together to drive positive change in your workplace. While engagement often means introducing new strategies, employee experience frequently renovates existing procedures to make them work better for employees. And the best employee experience design begins by viewing the organization’s physical environment, policies, and technology from the employee’s perspective.
