Get Organized, or Don’t: How to Manage Different Organizational Styles

Organization looks different for different people. You might be known around the office for your tidy desk and orderly desktop, while another employee’s workstation overflows with scraps, notes, toys, and plants. Your system makes sure that there is a place for everything, and everything is in its place—whereas you can’t help but wonder how your colleagues get anything done with their desks in such disarray. If your team appears to be in chaos, it may be time to encourage your version of organization among your company and staff.

Before you try to organize your organization, take a step back to really think about it. We know that arranging and regulating processes and spaces can be beneficial, creating more efficient procedures and decreasing overall stress. In fact, when asked how people felt when they organized their workspace, they typically felt accomplished (71%), in control (68%), confident (54%), and motivated (52%). Everyone is different, though, so being organized might look different for everyone.

When forced into doing things a certain way and deprived of autonomy in their work, people typically feel less job satisfaction, and companies see a decrease in productivity and creativity. Trying to force someone to be more organized or to organize in a specific way, or being too organized yourself, can lead to increased stress and worry. While disorganization may not be good, it may not be as bad for some people as you think.

If you look at a situation from an outside perspective, something may seem unorganized, but it’s just organized differently than you would do it. Think about a stack of papers on a colleague’s desk. Looks untidy, right? To you, they may look like a messy stack of papers, but to your colleague, it may be a stack of papers organized by date, and set down so they can see the differences between months while they work. In this case, what appeared to be a mess was just a different way of organizing. It’s important to understand the difference between a disorganized office space—meaning you should intervene—and one that is simply organized differently.
