Hiring Outside Your Comfort Zone: Advice for Small Business Owners

For so many small businesses, the owners wear multiple hats and take care of tasks that they may not be traditionally trained in. But as the company grows, business owners often find that their business needs have exceeded their knowledge or capacity.

As a business owner, you may know a lot of things, and may have even built your business from nothing, but as a business grows, processes change, which can include developing more specialized areas to adapt to that growth. At some point, you will need to hire someone for a specific role or function that is outside of your area of expertise. But where do you start?

This is a hurdle that many business owners will run into at some point, typically during their initial growth. Think about a manufacturing company that is growing and needs to significantly increase its staff; the owner might decide to hire a human resources professional for the first time. Or a construction company that has always relied on word-of-mouth and referrals for new projects, but is interested in bringing on a full-time salesperson to target larger projects. For business owners who may know very little about a certain task or area, attempting to hire the best person for that job can be difficult.

Hiring for a position you know little about is a problem small businesses in all industries can face, whether because of growth, changing technology, or some other factor. It is also a common situation for many human resources professionals new to an industry or business.

Sometimes, the idea of letting go of a certain responsibility or task can be overwhelming. You’ve been doing it for so long, thinking of someone else doing it can be a bit scary. What if they don’t do it the way you do? It’s a tough spot to be in but it’s important to remember, as your company begins to grow, you can’t do it all. There is also a good chance that hiring someone with specific knowledge in a certain area can help improve upon what you were doing before. While hiring someone new can be a bit outside your comfort zone, it’s important for the future of your business.
